Bring Flavor to Food Banks

Learn about the importance getting spices to food banks and how you can help.

My Mission

Hi my name is Eva, and I’ve been a Girl Scout in the Philly area for 9 years. My troop does a lot of has done a lot of service at food banks and during my time there I noticed that I never saw spices that I saw in my house. Growing up in an Indian family spices were used in almost every meal wether it was paprika or garlic powder, that little touch made such a big difference. Knowing how food is so important to one’s culture and comfort I started thinking about how, many people who are food insecure don’t have the means to make their comfort food. Seeing this inspired me to make my Silver Project, Spices of Hope an initiate to create spice drives around the country to try to give more access to spices for food banks and raise awareness on the need. Here you’ll find a tool kit with everything you need to hold your own spice drive and make a difference.

 More Info

Spices are something that are often over looked. Although it seems like it’s just a small part of cuisine, not having access to spices has shown to have many affect on people (specifically immigrants). Spices usually have high prices making it hard for food banks to have access to them, but it has been shown that having acess to spices is very important and can have affects on school, jobs, sports, and wellness. This is because spices play a big part in connecting you to your culture, heritage, and family, so especially for immigrants having access to spices is important because it can make someone feel a little bit more at home.
